Are Fragrances Harmful?

The Fragrance of a Rose is Harmful?

A rose is a rose is a rose, isn’t it?

How can fragrances be harmful if they are an ingredient in so many beauty products? And why do brands, including “luxurious” brands use synthetic fragrances? Because the chemicals smell luxurious and are much cheaper to produce than natural scents. However, we encourage you to always be on the lookout for any products that contain “fragrance” as an ingredient. Here’s why:

Synthetic fragrances are mixtures of various chemicals that produce a desired scent with 95% of the chemicals derived from petrochemicals including phthalates.

Phthalates in Fragrances

Phthalates are endocrine disruptors. Researchers have linked phthalates to asthma, irritation of the eyes, skin, nose, throat; headache, dizziness, nausea, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, breast cancer, obesity and type II diabetes, neurodevelopmental issues, behavioral issues, autism spectrum disorders, altered reproductive development and male fertility issues.

A report from the United States based EWG states the following about Phthalates and Fragrances:

  • 71% of all cosmetics and skincare products contain phthalates
  • Fragrances are among the top 5 known allergens in North America and Europe
  • More than 100 fragrance ingredients can cause itchy, scaly, painful skin, and potentially worsen asthma
  • In general, there at least 3,000 ingredients that could possibly be used to form a product’s scent

Phthalates are in 100% of all fragrances!

Take A Look At The Image Below And Let Us Know If You Can Tell The Difference
Between The Column On The Left And The Column On The Right

fragrance, fragrances, essential oils

Were you able to tell the difference? Well done! If not, let’s explain.

The column on the left are essential oils whereas the column on the right are fragrances. Not easy to tell the difference is it? There is in fact, a big and potentially harmful difference between the two. We encourage you to always read the label on your products and look for the word “fragrance”. It is a guessing game on the amount of chemicals used to make that scent!

Avant is dedicated to providing non-endocrine disrupting products but the same cannot be said about other companies. Our products contain healthy botanical oils that double as “scents” including such essentials as eucalyptus, lavender, rosehip and more. Essential oil scents dissipate quite quickly and will not linger all day like fragrances. We will never “fragrance” up our products.

Avant cares about the wellbeing of people and want you to know that formulas which include “fragrance” are absorbed into the bloodstream directly through the skin!
